efficient database design for notification of facebook/stackoverflow

I would like to know what is the efficient database design for displaying notification as in stackexchange and facebook. Did they save a copy of the message string in a separate table in database or query the message from each relevant table that is related to the action performed? Or do they store and retrieve it in text file?
