What is the equivalent of an Access DB parameter in mysql?

I just recently switched our access database to a mysql database. I'd like to create a query where a user enters the parameter for the year. In access I was able to just create a parameter. how do I do this in mysql so that the end user doesn't have to change the "where" in a query/view?
